Ed Kenley Amphitheatre: Photo of The Day, August 8

One of my favorite groups is performing this week at the Ed Kenley Amphitheater. On Saturday, August 11 at 8 PM Ryan Shupe and the Rubber Band will be here. I love the versatility of these guys and their amazing performing skills always blow me away. If you are already a fan, or if you don’t yet know about them, I’d like to suggest you buy tickets and go!

Layton City is very lucky to have the Ed Kenley Amphitheater. Built in 1995 and named in memory of Ed Kenley, who started Ed Kenley Ford in Layton, this amphitheater is the centerpiece of the good work done by the Davis Arts Council. Jewel Lee Kenley is the generous benefactor, and we are so proud to have this smart, generous business woman in our community.

Whenever I go to the amphitheater for a production or a concert, I prefer sitting in a lawn chair up on the grass. I guess we could call them the “cheap seats”. It is just fun to sit there with everyone, singing and dancing together. We always pack a picnic and make a party of it.

Each Sunday the amphitheater is the site of the free Sunday Night Concert Series which has typically highlighted excellent, local musical talent. In addition, the Summer Concert Series is always a stellar line up of artists from across the country. In the past I’ve enjoyed the music of Don McLean, Ryan Shupe (of course), The Temptations, and Kenny Loggins. May I just say that Kenny Loggins “live” is amazing. What a show that guy put on last year!

Last August, the Davis District’s guest teachers had just arrived from China a few days before the Kenny Loggins’ concert. I took them as a way to introduce them to our great city and some great American Music. By the end of the night, they were dancing to “Footloose” along with the rest of us. I still smile when I remember it.

This summer will be the second year of the Art Council’s Shakespeare in the Park productions. They will be doing Romeo and Juliet from August 22 to August 27. I think I know what the Chinese Teachers will be going to see this year! Directed by Mark Fossen, the production will highlight some great local talent.

To purchase tickets to any of the concerts or productions, I’ve included links below. It is important that we show our support of the good work of the Arts Council by purchasing tickets and participating in these wonderful community events.

Which concerts, plays or musicals from the Arts Council’s line up over the years have you most enjoyed? I’d love to hear about it.
